From Snapshot to Showcase

A great photograph is born in the mind, not in the camera. Eight weeks to learn to see like a photographer, and finish with a panel of work you’re proud to show.

Who it's for

For people who take pictures and want to make photographs. You don’t need new gear: whether you shoot on a flagship mirrorless camera or a three-year-old smartphone, light, composition and story work the same way.

Your eight weeks

01 Seeing like a photographer

Moving from taking pictures to making photographs.

02 The language of composition

Leading lines, symmetry, and when to break the rules.

03 Light: the paintbrush

Direction, quality, and the golden hour.

04 Telling a story

Emotion, gesture and narrative weight.

05 The digital darkroom

Purposeful editing with free tools like Snapseed.

06 Finding your voice

Developing a consistent personal style.

07 Developing a critical eye

Evaluating and curating your own work, ruthlessly.

08 Creating a project

Building a panel of images that shows what you can do.

How it works

Eight live sessions

90 minutes each on Zoom: teaching, then hands-on exercises.

Notes and inspiration

A PDF handout every week, and curated galleries of work worth studying.

An exercise every week

Practical assignments, with feedback on your own images.

A finished panel

By week eight you’ll have a panel of your own work, ready to show.

Your tutor

I’m Paul Lanigan, a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society. My FRPS panel is a documentary study of hurling. I shoot street, documentary and landscape, and I still develop my own film.
